Vic: Former governor-general to be awarded honorary degree

MELBOURNE, April 3 AAP - Former governor-general Sir William Deane will be awarded
an honorary Doctor of Laws degree today.

The ceremony will be held at the University of Melbourne.

The citation for Sir William describes him as a person distinguished by eminent public
service to Australia, who, after his appointment as the 22nd Governor-General of Australia,
transformed that office.

It said his tenure as Governor-General would be "especially remembered for his passionate
advocacy on behalf of marginalised groups in Australian society" and his "ceaseless endeavours
in furtherance of the cause of reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians".
