Eschewing many common dairy practices, including synthetic hormones, Steven Judge and his partners produce what they consider the purest, most environmentally sensitive milk possible.

Their 20-farm company, Vermont Milk Producers Inc., sells 2,500 gallons a week across New England, advertising on cartons that members ``treat their cows humanely and pledge never to use hormones to stimulate and make moremilk.''

This week, however, the farmer-owned company was barred from New York markets when state Milk Control Director Harold Rudnick ruled the firm's package unacceptable under federal Food & Drug Administration …
