FED: Welfare report handed down

A report on Australia's social security system has been handed down this morning.

The McClure report is expected to be a blueprint for major reform of Australia's $55
billion-a-year social security system.

PATRICK MCCLURE, chief executive of Mission Australia and chairman of the reform committee,
says the document is about getting people into jobs.

Mr MCCLURE says the report focuses on more individualised service delivery and incentives
for people to get part-time or casual work.

Democrats leader MEG LEES says one of the party's chief concerns with the welfare report,
is what the government will do with it.

Senator LEES says some of the recommendations are very positive, and are a step in
the right direction, but the way the government interprets the report is going to be one
of the problems.
