Qld: Mackenroth should be sacked Opposition

Queensland's opposition parties have called on Premier PETER BEATTIE to sack his treasurer
over his role in the furore about the state's ailing power industry.

Documents leaked to the media have provided proof that Treasurer TERRY MACKENROTH ignored
departmental advice in appointing board members to oversee the government-owned power
companies, Ergon and Energex.

Opposition parties claim the board members appointed by Mr MACKENROTH were either his
mates or Labor-friendly and had presided over the collapse of the state's electricity
industry.

A recent report into the industry found power companies have failed to adequately maintain
the electricity network and are struggling to meet current and future demand.

Opposition leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG says the case is the worst cronyism seen in Queensland.

Both he and Liberal leader BOB QUINN say the premier must sack Mr MACKENROTH.
