Vic Vic TAFE loan plan yet to get federal backing, Brumby

Premier JOHN BRUMBY says a Victorian plan .. to introduce a HECS-style loan scheme
for TAFE students .. has yet to receive federal backing.

He's playing down reports the federal government has given his government in-principle
support for the reforms .. which are designed to tackle skills shortages.

Under the changes .. Victoria will introduce a loan scheme for TAFE .. abolish caps
on TAFE places .. and increase tuition fees for some diplomas.

Mr BRUMBY says fee increases will apply to courses where students receive a significant
private benefit.

He says the reforms will encourage greater participation in higher education .. and
denies they'll deter some students.
